Is There Still a Federal Tax Credit for Replacement Windows in 2026?

No. The federal 25C credit for windows and doors ended for anything placed in service after December 31, 2025. Here's what that means for 2025 vs. 2026 installs, and where homeowners can still save.

The short answer: the federal window credit has ended

The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (IRC Section 25C), which used to cover part of the cost of energy-efficient windows, skylights, and exterior doors, was ended by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

The credit does not apply to windows or doors placed in service after December 31, 2025. There is no federal tax credit for replacement windows or doors installed in 2026.

Windows installed in 2025 vs. 2026

If your windows or doors were installed and placed in service in 2025, you can still claim the credit on your 2025 federal tax return, as long as the products met the program's efficiency requirements. Keep your receipts and the manufacturer's certification statement, and talk to a tax professional about filing.

If your windows are installed in 2026 or later, the federal credit is not available, regardless of when you signed the contract or paid a deposit. Be cautious of any sales pitch that still promises a federal window tax credit for a 2026 install.

Where you can still save in 2026

State and local utility rebates are now the best remaining source of savings on energy-efficient windows and doors. Many utilities and state energy programs offer rebates or low-interest financing, but amounts, eligibility, and deadlines vary widely and change often.

Check with your electric or gas utility and your state energy office for current programs before you buy, and confirm that the specific product and install method you're choosing qualifies.

Manufacturer and installer promotions (seasonal sales, bundled pricing, or financing offers) can also lower your cost. Ask each installer which promotions apply when you compare quotes.

Energy-efficient windows still pay off

Even without a federal credit, ENERGY STAR certified windows can lower heating and cooling bills and improve comfort. When comparing quotes, look at the NFRC label for U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) ratings suited to your climate.
