Your ZIP code

Where is the project?

Your ZIP adjusts the estimate for local installer wages. We never ask for a phone number or email.

You can skip this to use national installer wages.

No phone number. No email. No sales calls.

Aluminum is scored as a frame without a thermal break. Published prices for each option vary widely; see the methodology below for the source spread.

How the estimate works

Every result is an estimated range built from prices published by home-cost sites and a government study, then adjusted for local installer wages. It is not a quote, a bid or ZIP-specific pricing. Actual quotes vary with your home, the exact product and the installer. Displayed dollar figures are rounded to the nearest $100. The midpoint marker is simply the middle of the published ranges, not a prediction of what you will pay.

1. Price by style

For each style, the low end is the median of the sources' low figures and the high end is the median of their high figures, for a vinyl, double-pane window with a retrofit install. HomeAdvisor lists materials only, so its published retrofit labor of $100 to $300 per window is added. Bay and bow use installed-price sources only.

Cross-checks: This Old House's 2026 survey averages $474 to $551 per installed window, and a 2019 NREL study found about $600 per window (in 2019 dollars). Both fall inside the ranges above.

2. Frame material

Each source's price for a material is divided by the same source's vinyl price, and we use the median across five sources. The sources disagree widely, so the spread is shown.

3. Glass package

  • Standard double-pane (Low-E, argon) is the baseline. New windows commonly include both.
  • Basic double-pane (clear) is priced at 0.89 times the baseline, derived from Today's Homeowner's statement that Low-E adds 10% to 15%.
  • Triple-pane is priced at 1.60 times the baseline, the median of: This Old House 1.15, HomeGuide 1.44, Forbes Home 1.60, HomeAdvisor 1.95, Fixr 2.04.
  • Sound-rated (laminated) adds $275 to $625 per window (This Old House; HomeAdvisor lists $300 to $600).
  • Impact-resistant is priced at 2.36 times the style price, the median of: Today's Homeowner 3.27, This Old House 2.36, HomeAdvisor 1.16. Where a source prices impact glass per square foot, we assume a 15 square foot window.
  • Full-frame install adds 10% to 30%, the lowest and highest published premiums (Today's Homeowner 10% to 15%; Pella 20% to 30%).

4. Local installer wages

Your ZIP is matched to a county, then to a metro area when the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes a glazier wage for it, otherwise to your state. The adjustment is 1 + 0.3 × (local mean hourly wage ÷ 28.71 − 1). Labor is 30% of the total, per Fixr; materials are treated as the same everywhere. For example, California's glazier mean of $36.07 per hour gives a factor of 1.077. Wages are OEWS May 2025, Glaziers (47-2121), mean hourly wage from U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (retrieved 2026-10-03). ZIP to county uses the Census Bureau's 2020 relationship file (the county with the largest land overlap), and county to metro area uses the Census Bureau's 2023 delineation file. A ZIP we cannot match uses national wages. This adjusts for local installer wages only; it does not capture local permit fees, home age or material costs. Not used: Remodeling Cost vs. Value (license required for calculators), DoD Area Cost Factors (military construction only), RSMeans (copyrighted, 2020).

5. Energy, comfort and noise scores

Scores run from 0 to 100 and are directional comparisons, not product ratings. They use typical whole-window values, not the numbers on any specific product's NFRC label. Energy uses U-factor: 1.0 scores 0 and 0.2 scores 100. Comfort averages that with a solar-heat score (SHGC 0.60 scores 0, 0.25 scores 100). The solar-heat half favors hot climates such as Southern California, so weigh it less in a cold climate. Noise uses typical sound transmission class (STC): 25 scores 0 and 40 scores 100.

Aluminum frames use metal-frame values with no thermal break (U 0.63 for standard glass). Notes marked ASSUMPTION are our own judgment where no published value was found. Frame and glass values come from the Efficient Windows Collaborative (NFRC consumer guide) and a NorthernSTAR for U.S. DOE Building America guide; sound values from Andersen Windows and Guardian Glass, both manufacturers. NFRC does not rate windows for sound.

What is not included

Permits, upper-story labor, complex installs, trim, stucco or drywall repair, structural repair, and lead-safe work in homes built before 1978 are not in the estimate. See "Costs not in this estimate" on your result for the published ranges we found.
